What Is a Morse Code Audio Decoder?

An audio Morse decoder listens to beeps (or a recording of them) and reconstructs dots, dashes, and readable text.

Unlike a text Morse decoder that only pastes dots and dashes, this page accepts audio files and microphone recordings, then estimates dit/dah timing from the tone envelope.

Honest Expectations

Automatic decode works best on clean single-tone CW practice files. Noise, music, speech, multi-tone mixes, and overlapping stations often fail — use Manual / Tap when that happens.

Set WPM Hint & Sensitivity

WPM hint guides gap thresholds when the recording is uneven. Sensitivity raises or lowers the tone on/off threshold for quieter or louder files.

Tips for Clean WAV Decode

Better source audio beats fiddling with sliders.

Single Clear Tone

Prefer mono sine/CW practice tones without music beds or voiceovers. Generate a clean file with the Morse audio generator if you need a known-good sample.

Stable Volume

Avoid heavy compression pumping or dropouts. Trim long silence at the start/end when possible.

Match WPM Roughly

Set the WPM hint near the sending speed. Exact match is not required, but 5 WPM vs 40 WPM will confuse gap classification.

WAV vs Mp3

Both can work. WAV is usually cleaner for sharp on/off edges; heavily compressed MP3 may smear short dits — raise sensitivity or re-export as WAV if needed.

Why Decode Fails

Envelope detection is frequency-agnostic but not magic.

Noise & Room Echo

Background hiss keeps the detector “on,” or echo fills gaps between elements. Move closer, lower mic gain, or use a file instead of open-air recording.

Music & Speech

Songs and talking are not Morse. The tool looks for tone bursts, not melodies — results will be garbage; use Manual / Tap for written Morse instead.

Multi-Tone / QRM

Multiple stations or layered beeps confuse on/off decisions. Prefer a single isolated CW tone.

Extreme Speed or Timing

Very fast Morse or non-standard Farnsworth gaps may need WPM/sensitivity tweaks — or human tap entry.

No Server Upload for Decode

File bytes and microphone blobs are read with browser APIs (FileReader / MediaRecorder / AudioContext.decodeAudioData) and analysed in JavaScript on your machine.
